“A peanut sat on a railroad track. His heart was all a-flutter…”

A popular quatrain about a peanut being squashed into peanut butter has been cited in print since at least January 1922:

“A peanut sat on a railroad track
His heart was all a-flutter,
Along came number seventy-four
Toot-toot—‘twas peanut butter!”

The lines are sometimes sung for a short children’s song.
