Flu Manchu (flu + Fu Manchu)

Dr. Fu Manchu is a fictional villain character in novels by English author Sax Rohmer (1883-1959). “Flu Manchu” (flu + Fu Manchu) has been a popular portmanteau.

“A noted physician reports ‘the flu is a mystery ill, with the spirit of the case, prevailing in its cure.’ A sort of a Dr. Flu Manchu” was printed in the Medford (OR) Mail Tribune on December 19, 1939. “Flu Manchu” was printed in the Daily News (New York, NY) on August 16, 1957 and August 27, 1957.

The 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic was sometimes called “Flu Manchu.” “Current WHO designations for future #coronavirus #kungflu mutations : Flu Jitsu, Flu Manchu, Chop Fluey #coronachan #CoronaOutbreak” was posted on Twitter by Covida Mucus 19 on January 29, 2020.

Manhattan: Lets ave some common sense, reality and sanity about the supposed epidemic of Oriental influenza. Hysteria is mounting about this Asiatic flu from far-off places. If that’s the way it is to be, let’s go all the way and call it Flu Manchu.
