Gourmet Gas Station (gourmet food + gas station)

A “gourmet gas station” (gourmet food + gas station) is a place where motorists can get gasoline and have fine dining as well. The term is somewhat awkward—a “gourmet gas station” does not sell “gourmet gas,” although a food joke can be made about certain foods giving one gas.

“Gourmet gas station” has been cited in print since at least 1988. The term became popularized in October 2013, when “Park, pump and pig out at gourmet gas stations” was published in USA Today and “Gourmet Gas Stations Are Perfect Road Trip Stops” was published in The Huffington Post. The website Gas Station Gourmet was trademarked with a first use in January 2006.

Gas Station Gourmet
Part travel, mostly food, the Gas Station Gourmet explores America’s undiscovered culinary treasure, gas station food.  High gasoline prices have not slowed down travel. You need fuel and food when on a trip, but most people don’t realize that both can be found in the same place.  Gas station food is more than beef jerky and honey buns.

Al Hebert takes viewers to unique restaurants inside big truck stops and convenience stores.  The show celebrates the great American entrepreneur.  These small business owners have the kind of creativity and personality rarely highlighted on traditional food and travel shows.  Each episode begins with a visit to a gas station.  Viewers get a feel for the personality behind the food.

Many things about the Valero gas station in the trendy U Street area of Washington, D.C., are typical. Like the blue dumpster that sits in the corner of the small parking lot, the chewing gum stuck to the asphalt and the orange construction cone that props open the door.

So as you enter the Fast Gourmet convenience store and waltz past the 99-cent Cheez Doodles, the row of Kit Kats and bottles of antifreeze, it’s surprising to find a massive chalkboard hanging high above the cash register. It lists delightful dishes like yellowfin tuna steak, spinach pie and the famous chivito, a tenderloin-and-ham sandwich overflowing with mozzarella, bacon, green olives and hard-boiled eggs.

Gourmet gas stations are the greatest oxymorons to ever happen to your road trip.

Just imagine being on the open road, feeling those pangs of hunger and having the choice between a gas-station hot dog and a gas-station maple-leaf duck breast.
