1871 M. Schele de Vere Americanisms xii. 660 Maryland bears the proud title of Old-line State from the Old-Line regiments which she contributed to the Continental Army in the War of the Revolution—the only State that had regular troops of ‘the line’.
1948 H. L. Mencken Amer. Lang.: Suppl. 2 604 Maryland Free State..has overshadowed all the old nicknames..including Old Line State and Terrapin State.
