“My homework ate my dog”

“The dog ate my homework” is an old, lame excuse for a student not handing in homework on time. “My homework ate my dog” has been the subject of several jokes. A comic strip on June 1, 1994, showed a Genetic Engineering Class, and a student said, “My homework ate my dog!” “’My homework ate my dog.’ – Genetics student” was posted on Twitter by iMbet Ocsalev on June 20, 2012.

“The kid with the science project, how to raise a python, had to tell his teacher ‘my homework ate my dog’ how sad” was posted on Twitter by Warner Carter on October 16, 2008. “‘My homework ate my dog’ -student in python breeding class” was posted on Twitter by dan mentos on July 16, 2014. “I failed my python breeding class because of a late assignment. My homework ate my dog” was posted on Reddit—Jokes on June 4, 2019.

“‘My homework ate my dog.’ Victor Frankenstein. Age 6.  #famousexcuses” was posted on Twitter by Michael Fry on August 18, 2009. “Teacher: ‘Young Master Frankenstein! What happened to your dog? You’ll never pass Monster Building 101 if it’s missing.’ Victor: ‘My homework ate my dog’ #BadHomeworkExcuses” was posted on Twitter by Chris Bradshaw on March 16, 2019.

For the benefit of those who missed it, last night’s (June 1) Frank ‘n’ Ernest comic strip showed what appeared to be a scientist and a student, with a sign on the wall that read “Genetic Engineering Class”.  The professor is scowling at the student, who says “My homework ate my dog!” This comic strip annoyed me and I took the opportunity to write to the creator, Bob Thaves, whose email address is .  Here is a copy of the mail I sent him; I encourage others to write to him to to express their disapproval.

“I had to do an assignment on wild animals, and I decided to do my report on alligators. To complete my research, I took a trip to the zoo. I wanted to make a day of it, so I took along my pet dog. I figured we could throw a little frisbee, enjoy the sun, but boy was that trip a disaster. I had to tell my teacher that my homework ate my dog...”
