Under Surveillance Always ("USA” backronym)

The United States government checks some people’s Internet activity (among other activities) and some citizens believe that government surveillance has gotten out of control. The United States of America (USA) backronym (back acronym) of “Under Surveillance Always” has been cited in print since at least 2001.

A similar “USA” backronym is “United Stasi of America.”

U.S.A. - under surveillance always?
We live indoors. We walk outdoors from our houses into our cars, only briefly passing through the open air. We live behind walls and our neighbors are unable to see us shower, sleep, stare at the walls or pick our nose. Most people would be outraged if they were told that they could no longer expect such privacy and that friends, neighbors, or the government would be watching them go about their daily routines, knowing that they’d be constantly monitored.

U.S.A.: Under Surveillance Always
We’ve gotten used to cameras watching us in banks and some stores. We know the government records our phone calls and has the originals of our text messages and emails archived. We know web browsers record every click and keystroke we make so that their knowledge of us will ultimately be so intimate and accurate that they may confidently try to sell us anything.
