Washington, DC: Da Capital (nickname)

Some people jocularly say that the “DC” (District of Columbia) in “Washington, DC” stands for “Da Capital” or Da Capitol.”

“‘I know what D.C. stands for,’ bubbled Kendall. ‘Da Capital’” was printed in the Honolulu (HI) Advertiser on May 24, 1979. “‘What is the capital of the nation?’ ‘Washington, D.C.’ The judge nodded and asked, ‘And what does D.C. stand for?’ ‘Da Capital,’ the immigrant said” was printed in the Boston (MA) Globe on November 17, 1985.

“the D.C. stands for Da Capitol” was posted on the newsgroup alt.lifestyle.all-faiths on August 1, 2000.

Other “D.C.” nicknames include “District of Confusion” (since at least 1943), “District of Corruption” (since 1951), “Washington Demands Cash” (since 1958), “District of Criminals” (since at least 1992), “Dot.Com” (since 1999) and “District of Cunts” (since 2009).

Wikipedia: Washington, D.C.
Washington, D.C. (pronounced /ˈwɒʃɪŋtən ˌdiːˈsiː/, WOSH-ing-tən DEE-SEE), formally the District of Columbia and commonly referred to as Washington, the District, or simply D.C., is the capital of the United States, founded on July 16, 1790. Article One of the United States Constitution provides for a federal district, distinct from the states, to serve as the permanent national capital. The City of Washington was originally a separate municipality within the federal territory until an act of Congress in 1871 established a single, unified municipal government for the whole District. It is for this reason that the city, while legally named the District of Columbia, is known as Washington, D.C. The city shares its name with the U.S. state of Washington, which is located on the country’s Pacific coast.

24 May 1979, Honolulu (HI) Advertiser, George Daacon column, pg. A-3, col. 1:
THE FINISH LINES: Organist John McCreary’s young son Kendall was visiting relatives back East when he saw a freeway sign that read “Washington, D.C.” “I know what D.C. stands for,” bubbled Kendall. “Da Capital.”

Newspapers.com
17 November 1985, Boston (MA) Globe, “Off the Road” by Peter Anderson, pg. 50, col. 1:
“What is the capital of the nation?” “Washington, D.C.” The judge nodded and asked, “And what does D.C. stand for?” “Da Capital,” the immigrant said. It was a good story.

6 November 1994, Orlando (FL) Sentinel (Thank You, Magic—That Is More Like It” by Larry Guest, pg. C1, col. 1:
Imagine the audacity of the Washington, D.C., (Da Capital) Bullets, who apparently failed to read Orlando’s press clippings or lofty position in CD sales, delaying destiny by one day.

If one REALLY wants to be entertained watch Jay Leno interviewing all the Dims on one of his “Jay Walking” bits. Some do not know the current President, the branches of government, their Senator, Congressman or even the capitol of their own state. He asked on dimwit what the DC, in Washington DC. meant and she said “Da Capitol?” LOL
