“Karaoke” sounds a bit like “curry OK.” A joke has someone enter an Indian restaurant and the waiter asks, “Curry OK?” The diner responds, “Sorry, I hate singing in public.”

Karaoke /ˌkæriˈoʊki/ or /ˌkærəˈoʊki/ Japanese: [kaɾaꜜoke] カラオケ (clipped compound of Japanese kara 空 “empty” and ōkesutora オーケストラ “orchestra”), is a form of interactive entertainment or video game developed in Japan in which an amateur singer sings along with recorded music (a music video) using a microphone. The music is typically an instrumental version of a well-known popular song. Lyrics are usually displayed on a video screen, along with a moving symbol, changing color, or music video images, to guide the singer. In several Asian countries such as China, Cambodia or the Philippines, a karaoke box is called a KTV. The global karaoke market has been estimated to be worth nearly $10 billion.
Curry (/ˈkʌri/, plural curries) is an umbrella term referring to a number of dishes originating in the cuisine of the Indian subcontinent. The common feature is the use of complex combinations of spices or herbs, usually including fresh or dried hot chillies. The use of the term is generally limited to dishes prepared in a sauce. Curry dishes prepared in the southern states of India may be spiced with leaves from the curry tree.
